Antique Victorian c19th GLEDHILL Cash Register Till from old Batley Florist Shop

Offered here is an Antique Victorian c19th GLEDHILL Cash Register or Cash Till. This came from an old Florist Shop, at 464 Bradford Road, Batley, Kirklees. The shop was known as " Baines Florist ", this till was in the shop when the Baines family took over the florist. There is a screw above the brass handle at the front of the till, if this is slid to the right the cash drawer opens and a bell rings. There are several wooden compartments in the till drawer, they are shaped to allow different denominations of coins to easily slide out.

There is also a wooden section with a hinged lift up cover, to keep notes safe. There is a brass finger pull on the top of the lid to allow easy access. The mechanism is still fully functional, and the spring loaded drawer springs open when the screw catch is moved. On the top there is a glass panel, I believe this may have been where paper receipts came from, this contains an advert for Van Heiden Shirt Collars. On the side there are 2 early advertisements.

One says "Shout out Gouranga, be happy", (the shout is obscured) and the other says, " And Chant Hare Krishna ", these are obviously much later into the life of the till, but they are vintage and part of its life, so we have left them on the till. I believe the till is made from flame mahogony, it has a rich colouring and nice graining, and it is constructed with Dovetail joints. There is a keyhole above the brass handle on the front drawer, and a second keyhole in the drawer, the drawer opens and closes, but it can't be locked as we don't have a key. I believe the other lock releases the lid and lets you into the workings of the till, again we don't have this key. The till is still useable without this, and it would make a fabulous prop in an old shop, or for a movie, period tv series or a theatre production.

The entire piece measures 19.75 inches x 10 inches wide x 8 inches high. The original makers panel is still on the back panel, this is a lovely feature. " H Gledhill & Sons Ltd ".

The quality of the workmanship in the till is very good, and the patina of the wood is lovely. It does have a few knocks and marks from over 150 years of use, but it is still functional. The Brass lock is impressed with the Gledhill & Sons, London stamp, and Grade and Lever, the rest is indistinguishable. Please don't miss the opportunity, a fab piece for a Mancave, an old shop or bar, or as a prop for a production.
